Joe Root surpasses Kumar Sangakkara, becomes 6th highest run scorer in test history

Joe Root enters record books with 12,400 Test runs.

England batter Joe Root achieved yet another milestone in Test cricket on Sunday.

The world no.1 Test batter went past former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara‘s tally of 12,400 runs during the third Test against Sri Lanka at The Oval.

Root, who has been in sublime form of late, has now scored 12,402 runs in 267 innings of 146 Tests. He sits in sixth place on the list of highest run scorers in Test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar tops the tally with 15,921 runs while Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, and Alastair Cook follow in the top-5 respectively.

The 33-year-old Root is now aiming to become the first batter with 5,000 World Test Championship runs. He needs 27 more to achieve the feat.

A century in the second innings could also help Root break Cook’s record of most runs for England in Tests. He will also move to sixth place for most Test centuries if he scores a ton.

Root had broken Cook’s England record of 33 Test tons by scoring centuries in both innings at Lord’s last match. He will look to continue his fine form in the ongoing series.
