After over a decade of representing her country,
Jess Jonassen found herself on the sidelines for Australia, last playing for the national team in October 2023. But the experienced all-rounder was given a fresh opportunity to shine on the biggest stage through the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League.
And has she taken advantage? Jonassen took a tournament-leading nine wickets in her first three games, becoming the first player to claim three in consecutive matches. “It was certainly gratifying to see the hard work pay off,” Jonassen remarked. The stint away from the international game left her wondering if she still had what it takes at elite levels.
Luckily, reassurance from support staff in the Australian set-up boosted her confidence during the doubts. But it’s the memory of her late father that spurs her on most during challenging periods. “I look up and think about what Dad would tell me before going out to bat. His words of keeping fighting stay with me,” Jonassen fondly recalled.
Having captain Meg Lanning leading Delhi provides sage guidance, with the duo’s long history together for Australia breeding familiarity and trust. “She knows I’ll step up in the pressure moments. I’m enjoying repaying her faith in me,” Jonassen said gratefully.
While Australian selection remains out of her control, Jonassen is making the most of her time in the WPL. With strong performances, incredible spirit, and support from two father figures, she’s showing she still has what it takes at the top – now it’s up to the national selectors to come knocking again.
