Star English cricketer Jos Buttler unveiled the golden tip he had gained from Virat Kohli in the IPL. Among the best things to happen to the Indian Premier League (IPL) is that a number of the world’s finest international players have the opportunity to rub shoulders with their peers, and exchange ideas with one another.
On this background, England superstar and contemporary IPL legend Jos Buttler has shared an open conversation with India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) superstar Virat Kohli, and how the latter had advised him with a wonderful piece of advice.
Buttler and Kohli are two of IPL’s greatest run-scorers, Buttler having topped the chart of a season once and Kohli twice. Buttler, however, disclosed that Kohli’s advice had been of great help in coping with the pressure of expectation.
I had one of those IPL seasons in 2022, where I got 868 runs. But he (Kohli) has the record for the highest number of runs in a season – 973. Which is just fantastic. So I struggled with the next season, in the sense ‘how do I even come close to that’,” Buttler recounted to Stuart Broad in the ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ podcast.
“We were practising alongside RCB. I just thought I’d ask him a couple of things. He had just completed batting, and he was lonely, I thought ‘Why not go and ask him’. The question was on how to deal with expectations. There’s more expectation on him than anyone in international cricket,” Buttler explained.
Buttler unveiled the golden piece of advice offered to him by Kohli. Perhaps that was simply that particular season when it was the greatest season you’ve ever had. You just have to move on from that. Don’t attempt to do it again. Even when you’re feeling the pressure, that’s all by yourself that you are piling it on. It’s alright, life will be okay,” that is what Kohli said to Buttler, as described by the latter.
Kohli even bared his vulnerable side, which Buttler went on to say made him feel more at ease about his self-doubts. He discussed some of the insecurities that he sometimes has regarding his own game. I mean, this is quite possibly the best player of our generation,” Buttler explained.
“He’s human too, but he said that ‘there are days when I pick up the bat and I don’t know how to play’. I’ve felt that a lot, so if even he feels that way, then it’s alright” Buttler indicated previously. He was so giving with his time, and so informative. I just recall leaving and being so grateful for his time and appreciative of his advice,” Buttler stated.
