Mark Wood to miss India series after knee surgery

England’s pace bowler Mark Wood will be out of action for the home series against India in June after undergoing knee surgery. Wood, who has been one of the mainstays of the English bowling attack, has filled the gap left by the retirements of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. The injury is likely to keep him out of commission for four months, missing at least four games in the series starting on June 20.

Declaring himself “gutted” to be sidelined for so long after playing for England in all forms since last year began, Wood continued, “But I’ve got every hope that I’ll be back firing on all cylinders now that I’ve been able to sort my knee out.” Wood thanked the surgeon, medical team, teammates, and supporters for their help and said he was keen to be back for a critical 2025 season.

England tour of India marks the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both countries. Both teams had promising starts to the WTC 2023-25 cycle but suffered setbacks that ended their hopes. The series arrives at a crucial moment for India, who suffered a 1-3 tour loss in their last tour of Australia.

For England, the series will start their summer schedule as they build up towards the 2026 T20 World Cup in India. Under the leadership of Ben Stokes, the side will try to emulate their 2022 success when they defeated New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa, although they lost to India and the Ashes series ended 2-2 in 2023.
