Glenn McGrath questions India’s bowling attack beyond Bumrah.
Legendary pacer Glenn McGrath stressed the importance of a strong opening bowling pair for teams’ T20 World Cup chances. While tipping Mitchell Starc and Jasprit Bumrah to impact Australia and India’s fortunes, the Aussie icon raised valid concerns over who will support the two spearheads.
McGrath acknowledged Bumrah’s class but questioned who would bag wickets around him for India. Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh are the other pace options, but he emphasized that one needs to fire and share the burden.
A left-arm seamer offers a tactical edge as batters battle contrasting angles. In that context, the experienced Arshdeep could get the nod alongside Bumrah, given his T20 specialist credentials. However, Siraj’s dip in form and economy might aid Arshdeep’s case.
At the previous World Cup, Arshdeep spearheaded ahead of the injured Bumrah alongside Mohammed Shami. But Siraj’s rise has pushed him down the pecking order until he regained contention.
With a power-packed opening attack is key in the slam-bang format where there’s minimal time to adjust, McGrath believes India must find the right foil for their spearhead if aiming to go all the way. Starc must likewise support Australia’s charge.
