Former England captain questions scheduling of T20 WC semis.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has criticized the scheduling of the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals following Afghanistan’s crushing defeat against South Africa.
Vaughan flagged that Afghanistan lacked practice time due to flight delays after their last Super Eight match on Monday. The side was given just a day to acclimatize before the big-match encounter.
Suggesting bias in favor of hosts India, he advocated the India-England clash should have taken place earlier to give Afghanistan more time.
The uneven Trinidad pitch, aiding pace, also came under scrutiny as the minnows could only manage 56 – their lowest T20I total.
The Afghans had scripted history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time. But without sufficient preparation at this stage, their challenge ended meekly against a dominant South African attack.
While the pre-planned venues assigned India the Guyana stadium, Vaughan questioned if other considerations could have allowed a fairer playing field.
His remarks have re-opened the debate around scheduling prerogatives clashing with providing all teams an equal opportunity.
