Veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali calls time on England career.
Birmingham-born cricketer Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. In an interview with Daily Mail, the left-handed batter and off-spinner confirmed calling it quits after representing England in 68 Tests, 138 ODIs, and 92 T20Is since 2014.
Ali, who didn’t find a place in England’s recent tours, stated it was the right time to step aside for younger players to come forward.
The first Asian-origin captain in England’s T20I history finishes with five Test and three ODI centuries besides 366 wickets across formats.
He was part of England’s title-winning squad at the 2019 O50 World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Ali, who holds the record for England’s fastest T20I fifty, expressed pride over his 14-year international sojourn. However, he acknowledged the team’s need for transition.
While the all-rounder will continue plying his trade in franchise leagues, he also eyes coaching assignments in the future.
Ali’s retirement brings the curtains down on a memorable England career, where he cemented his status as a remarkable servant of the national team.
