MS Dhoni faces criticism for late batting appearance in CSK’s IPL 2024 clash

In a surprising turn of events, MS Dhoni faced backlash on Sunday, May 5, for his delayed entry into the batting lineup during the Super Kings’ IPL 2024 match against Punjab in Dharamsala. Fans expressed disappointment as Dhoni, for the first time in his T20 career, batted at No. 9, leaving him with just nine deliveries to face. He arrived at the crease after all-rounder Shardul Thakur’s dismissal, a decision that didn’t sit well with a section of supporters.

Adding to the disappointment, Dhoni’s innings was cut short when he was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Harshal Patel. The Punjab bowler outsmarted the former CSK captain with a slower-ball yorker that dipped and hit the off-stump. Dhoni appeared visibly distraught as CSK lost two wickets in consecutive balls, following Shardul Thakur’s brief contribution of 17 runs off 11 balls.

Questions arose regarding Dhoni’s decision to bat so low in a crucial match that CSK needed to win. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan also voiced his concerns about Dhoni’s reluctance to elevate himself in the batting order, particularly when the team required his expertise in the middle. With CSK struggling at 122 for 6 after losing Mitchell Santner in the 16th over, Shardul’s appearance ahead of Dhoni surprised many.

Social media was abuzz with memes as Dhoni’s decision to bat at No. 9 sparked numerous amusing reactions. Meanwhile, some CSK fans were left disheartened by the franchise’s questionable call.
