Dhoni set for competitive return in IPL 2024

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to make his competitive comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Dhoni will lead CSK against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match on March 23 in Chennai.

The return comes after several months of rehabilitation for the former India skipper, who underwent knee surgery last year. Significant uncertainty existed around his availability for IPL 2024, but the 40-year-old has joined the CSK camp.

However, concerns remain over his knees’ long-term sustainability with increasing workload. Dhoni’s former teammate Ambati Rayudu has suggested using the ‘impact player’ rule to manage his duties.

“He can take a backseat and let someone lead in the middle overs. This could be a transition phase if it’s his last IPL,” Rayudu told Star Sports.

He believes Dhoni may continue captaining for a few more years if he decides to play beyond 2024. Rayudu also remarked that Dhoni played through severe knee issues during IPL 2023 and continues representing CSK while being just “10% fit”.

Dhoni has yet to reveal his future plans, but he will look to sign off in style should the upcoming season be his last in the cash-rich league. He led CSK to their record-extending fifth title last year.
