Chennai Super Kings name Ruturaj Gaikwad as new captain for IPL 2024.
The Chennai Super Kings have handed over the team’s captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League. In a social media post, CSK announced that the 40-year-old MS Dhoni has decided to step down as captain and passed on the leadership mantle to the young Gaikwad.
“MS Dhoni has entrusted the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings to Ruturaj Gaikwad before IPL 2024. Gaikwad has been an integral part of the CSK squad since 2019, representing the team in 52 matches,” the franchise stated.
Gaikwad’s new role will see the 26-year-old bat take on the big responsibility of leading the defending champions. Speculation was rife over Dhoni’s future as skipper after he hinted on social media a few weeks ago that he might step aside to allow fresh leadership at CSK.
However, it remains unclear if Dhoni will continue playing for Chennai as a player in the upcoming season or take on a mentoring role. The wicket-keeper batter had captained CSK to a record 4 IPL titles since taking over in 2008.
With MS Dhoni’s decision, the spotlight will be on Ruturaj Gaikwad to carry CSK’s winning legacy forward. He will have big shoes to fill, but the team trusts that his experience will help steer the side to success in IPL 2024.
