Nepal hopes not to lose on including Lamichhane in the T20 World Cup.
Even as controversial spinner Sandeep Lamichhane’s US visa got rejected, the Nepal Cricket Association is trying to include him in the T20 World Cup squad. Lamichhane’s rape conviction was recently overturned, but the visa denial is a setback.
Expressing disappointment, Lamichhane apologized to fans for not being able to join. However, PCA President Chatur Bahadur Chand stated they are exploring options for his selection, given his importance.
A poster boy 23-year-old’s dramatic career ascend saw him play globally before recent troubles. Though banned, arrested, and then freed on bail, Nepal recalled Lamichhane last year until his conviction.
Nepal is making its second appearance. It starts against the Netherlands in Dallas on June 4, followed by games against top teams.
Before controversies, Lamichhane’s IPL success had uplifted the profile of cricket in the Himalayan nation. At his acquittal ceremony, he vowed to further Nepal’s status. While the beautiful game is slowly growing in popularity, the World Cup presents another platform for Nepal to make its mark.
As they hope to utilize Lamichhane’s skills and experience, the final call depends on feasible routes within stipulated timelines for the mega event beginning next month.
