Mike Hesson has been appointed the white-ball head coach of the men’s side, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Tuesday, 13 May. Hesson takes over from the post held by Aqib Javed, the interim head coach after Gary Kirsten’s exit in October 2024. Javed will still be part of Pakistan cricket but will move into the role of Director of High Performance.
Hesson, who is currently Islamabad United’s head coach in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), will assume control of Pakistan’s white-ball national team from 26 May. Internationally, Hesson has also previously coached New Zealand and Kenya. During his stewardship, the Black Caps established themselves as one of the teams to beat, advancing to the 2015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final.
Commenting on Hesson’s appointment, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated, “I am delighted to announce the appointment of ex-New Zealand cricketer and well-known coach Mike Hesson as the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s team.”.
“Mike comes with a rich body of international experience and a strong record of building competitive teams. We welcome his leadership and expertise to form the future vision of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket. Welcome on board, Mike!” Naqvi was also happy to welcome Aqib Javed as the Director of High Performance.
For augmenting our cricket infrastructure, it is a privilege to have on board Aqib Javed as the High Performance Director,” he further announced. “The addition of him, together with Mike Hesson as the Head Coach, is a powerful step in Pakistan Cricket’s overall strategic direction.”
“Together with their leadership and expertise, theirs will be crucial to the nation’s development, growth and victory. His first job is to be the home series of five-match T20Is against Bangladesh
