Former skipper Waqar Younis, if given the mandate, might return to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), where currently the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is thinking of making him the director of cricket affairs.
A source on the board that this author has spoken to in confidence has revealed to PTI that, like other national boards, Naqvi wants a former player to deal with cricket affairs only.
Some of the specific responsibilities expected to be tendered to the new arrangement include “Waqar Younis might be given full mantle of managing affairs of the men’s cricket, including dealing with the two foreign chief coaches, national selectors, and departments of domestic cricket,” the source said.
The source revealed that the PCB chief plans to vest full authority in the former fast bowler to oversee the affairs of men’s cricket as a director, while some of the issues can be overseen by other former players.
“I suppose Naqvi doesn’t want to centralize all powers for the simple reason that he wants to decentralize things, and where matters of cricket are concerned, in the future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be looked over by the director of cricket.”
The source disclosed that at present, Naqvi is involved in the process of organizing the Champions Trophy and issues concerning it with other issues in the board’s administration.
“As the federal interior minister, Naqvi has reasons for his belief that all issues related to cricket should be resolved by the experts and not persons belonging to the administrative field only,” he further said.
