Despite scoring 556 runs in the first innings, Pakistan went on to suffer an innings defeat at the hands of England in the Multan Test.
In response to Pakistan’s 556-run total in the first innings of the Multan Test, England put up a tremendous total of 823/7 before declaring the innings.
The Pakistan cricket team thus lost by an innings and 47 runs. In response, Pakistan could manage only 220 runs in the second innings and hence lost the Test in a ‘record-breaking’ manner.
As a result, Pakistan went into the history books for all the wrong reasons. It became the first team in the game’s history to suffer an innings defeat after scoring more than 500 runs in the first innings.
No side has ever faced a loss as crushing as this, going back to the 147-year history of Test cricket, thanks to the sheer might of Joe Root’s double hundred and Harry Brook’s triple century.
Pakistan did well, scoring more than half a thousand runs in the first innings, with Abdullah Shafique, skipper Shan Masood, and Agha Salman notching centuries.
Even Saud Shakeel did well with 84 runs. However, the bowling attack of Pakistan was like toothless against the batting armoury of England as the loss of wicket came more through fatigue and less through the skillset of the host bowlers.
Pakistan’s batting line-up hardly batted through in the second innings, with Agha Salman making 63 runs as the highest individual score.
Aamir Jamal remained not out on 55 runs by the time England completed the win by taking 9 of Pakistan’s 10 wickets.
