A Captain’s Defender
As Mumbai Indians struggle in IPL 2024, the scrutiny of new captain Hardik Pandya intensifies with each passing game. Fans and pundits aslike are questioning his leadership abilities as MI sit bottom of the table after four losses.
However, Pandya still has one stalwart supporter: veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard. After Sunday’s narrow defeat to Chennai Super Kings, in which Pandya’s final over went for 26, Pollard leapt to his captain’s defence.
The former West Indies star has seen Pandya’s rise from an exuberant youngster to a responsible leader first-hand. While some may dismiss recent performances, Pollard sees the evolution in his game. “As players mature, different aspects like accountability come into play. Hardik is working tirelessly to improve.”
Pollard isn’t blind to the mounting criticism but urges perspective. “We all have good and bad matches. Instead of singling people out, we must encourage each other.” He believes now is not the time to abandon Pandya.
The coach labelled constant nitpicking “sickening” and expressed hope the tide will turn when Pandya leads India at the upcoming T20 World Cup. “You’ll all be cheering for him then. Let’s support him to get the best out of a tremendous talent.”
Through turbulent times with Mumbai Indians, Pollard has Pandya’s back. His staunch defence underscores how the captain’s resolute approach could still steer the team to brighter days.
