Ravi Shastri confident of Mohammed Shami’s return ahead of key test series

Ravi Shastri is hopeful of Mohammed Shami’s early return to the India squad.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri expressed confidence in pacer Mohammed Shami’s comeback, during commentary on Day 5 of the India vs Bangladesh Kanpur Test.

Sidelined since the T20 World Cup due to an ankle injury, Shami has been undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to be included for the New Zealand Tests.

Despite missing action, Shastri believes Shami remains integral to India’s plans. Citing his experience and skills, he thought the seamer could have troubled Bangladesh in Kanpur conditions by assisting reverse swing.

Shastri remarked Shami, a seasoned campaigner familiar with Green Park, would be an “ideal” bowler here. “Very few have his seam skills. From India’s perspective, hope he regains full fitness,” he said.

Fellow commentator Dinesh Karthik echoed the views, highlighting Shami’s brilliance and role as Jasprit Bumrah’s pace spearhead supported by records.

While the New Zealand Tests are important for game time, Shastri feels Shami’s rehab must have progressed for the Australia series.

With a grueling five-match itinerary, rotating pacers will be key. An early return will help Shami stake his claim.
