Ashwin Claims to Have Cracked the Code on Facing Off Against Steve Smith.
In a bold statement made just two weeks before the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed that he has “figured out” his long-time rival, former Australian captain Steve Smith, over the course of their decade-long cricketing rivalry.
The upcoming series could potentially be the final face-off between the two stalwarts, who have engaged in a captivating cat-and-mouse chase on the cricket field. Ashwin first encountered Smith during India’s 2013/14 tour of Australia, and the rivalry has only intensified since then.
In the initial three encounters, comprising three Border-Gavaskar Trophies, Smith had the upper hand, scoring 348 runs in 570 balls, and being dismissed just three times by Ashwin.
Speaking to 7Cricket ahead of the upcoming Australia Test series, Ashwin revealed how his experiences in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing alongside and against Smith, have helped him gain valuable insights into the Australian’s batting approach and preparation.
“Steve Smith is fascinating as a player against spin especially,” the 37-year-old said. “He has his unique technique, even playing fast bowling. But with spin, I think he came in with sound game plans, and sound preparations and yeah, he used to execute it come what may.
Ashwin credited his time with Delhi Capitals and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL as crucial in helping him understand Smith’s unique methods and approaches to facing spin bowling.
The Indian spinner acknowledged that Smith’s tactical nous and ability to adapt have often given him the edge in their past encounters. However, Ashwin believes he has now found the key to countering the Australian’s formidable batting skills.
With Ashwin’s newfound confidence in his ability to handle Smith, the upcoming clash between the two cricketing giants promises to be a captivating subplot in the larger narrative of the crucial Test series.
