Ponting signs on as Punjab Kings head coach for IPL multi-year stint.
Cricket great Ricky Ponting has joined Punjab Kings as their head coach for an extended tenure in the Indian Premier League.
The franchise was announced on social media, with Ponting expressing excitement about realigning visions with owners and management.
Ponting had spent seven seasons with Delhi Capitals since 2018, overseeing playoff finishes in 2019-21 including a runners-up campaign. However, his exit from the Capitals was confirmed earlier this year after a period of middling results.
Reports suggest Ponting will decide Punjab’s support staff as well, having overseen MI’s title win under Rohit Sharma in 2015 previously.
The Kings will hunt for a new captain with Shikhar Dhawan’s retirement, though Sam Curran led briefly last term.
Ponting’s priority now lies in identifying players for retention ahead of the looming mega auction. He takes over from Andy Flower and Simon Katich at Punjab Kings seeking a turnaround, after Bayliss failed to replicate KKR’s success there.
With his proven record in tournament coaching and playing experience with KKR, Ponting aims to stabilize the franchise.
