As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has opened up about his attempts to persuade head coach Rahul Dravid to continue in his role, a request that ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Dravid had earlier announced that the upcoming T20 World Cup will mark the end of his tenure as India’s head coach, a position he has held since November 2021. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already invited applications for the coveted role, and several high-profile names have been linked to the job.
Addressing the media, an emotional Rohit acknowledged his efforts to convince Dravid to stay on. “I tried convincing him (Dravid) to stay, but there are many things that he needs to look after as well. But yeah, I enjoyed my time with him,” the Indian captain said.
Rohit’s relationship with Dravid dates back to 2007, and the swashbuckling opener praised the veteran coach’s inspiration and guidance throughout his career. Despite India’s inability to claim any major trophies under Dravid’s leadership, Rohit believes the former India captain’s tenure has been a “fruitful period” for Indian cricket.
As Dravid prepares to bid farewell to his role, Rohit remains curious whether the team has planned a sendoff for the outgoing coach. The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to commence on October 5, with India scheduled to take on Ireland in their opening match on October 9.
