Rohit Sharma stands firm on T20I retirement decision

But, now it is final. Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener, has clearly stated time and again that he will not reverse his decision of retiring himself from T20Is for India.

India skipper Rohit Sharma has been very clear over the fact that there is no thinking of revoking the T20I retirement for India and said that he is fine with it. Rohit, who decided to hang his boots from T20 internationals as soon as India emerged victorious in the ICC T20 World Cup three months ago, feels that the term’retirement’ does not mean much and is actually rather fake in international cricket these days, given how unloyal certain athletes have become to it.

There are many cricketers from different parts of the world who have changed their minds over more than once about retirement, such as Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, etc. Great legends of sports like Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Kim Clijsters, and Tom Brady have not taken their retirements in the past seriously.

Therefore, Rohit’s disbelief is quite reasonable; however, this feeling does not affect him in any way and does not make him change his mind. Rohit agrees with the timing of the decision, I guess. And why not? Anyway, people rarely get to go out on their own terms.

The first two were achieved by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in 2014, while the third one was achieved by Michael Clarke having the 2015 World Cup.

However, the number of Indian cricketers who get an opportunity to retire with the feeling that they won the World Cup cannot be counted on the fingers of one’s hand. While the whole of India was celebrating India’s iconic T20 World Cup win at night, Rohit silently dropped the R bomb and joined his captain Virat Kohli into T20 retirement.
