Rohit Sharma’s test captaincy at stake, says Gambhir

Rohit Sharma may remain Test captain for the next five-match series against England. India’s victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 could result in Rohit Sharma remaining the Test captain for the next five-match series against England in June-July.

The right-handed batsman was a shadow of his former self in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and things became so bad that Rohit stepped down from the final Test in Sydney. But Rohit has come out of the woods in the white-ball games, guiding India to their second ICC title in eight months. India had a close-to-flawless campaign in the eight-team tournament, undefeated to claim the title.

Under Rohit Sharma, India lost six of the last eight Tests the side participated in, including a 0-3 home whitewash against New Zealand. Consequently, for the first time in history, India didn’t qualify for the WTC final. Rohit’s comeback with the bat in the longest format was much to be desired.

Rohit even went back to the Ranji Trophy, playing for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir. But he could not make it count. But according to a report by news agency PTI, Rohit is still the Test captain as he benched himself from the previous match in Sydney.

Technically, Rohit is still the Test captain. He benched himself from the previous Test in Sydney where he clarified that a team can’t continue with several out of form batters,” PTI had quoted a BCCI source as saying. After Australia Tests, India haven’t played any Tests, and hence, there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he doesn’t want to play Tests,” the source added.
