Shahid Afridi announced as ICC T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador

Taking a further turn, the ICC has recently decided that former Pakistan cricket star Shahid Afridi will be the ambassador for the T20 WC 2024 tournament. Afridi is among those ambassadors who are selected based on merit, along with Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Usain Bolt.

Afridi is triggering the Pakistani people’s memory about the T20 World Cup. He had an instrumental role as a batsman in the historic final year of 2007 and their winning season in 2009, where he won ‘Player of the Match’ awards in both the semi-final and the final.

Speaking on the lines of his sentiments, Afridi said, “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is one event that is always special for me. From being part of the team that won the first-ever T20 World Cup to being the Player of the Tournament to lifting the trophy for the second time in 2009 – this tournament is always special.”

ICC General Manager Claire Furlong applauded Afridi for joining the ICC team in particular, saying, “Shahid has played in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, out of which he was a captain in two and he was awarded Player of the Match when he won the cup in 2009. Therefore it could only make perfect sense to include a man of his caliber in the ranks of the All-Star Ambassadors.”

The tournament will be staged in the West Indies and the USA and will start on June 1. The first T20 World Cup match will take place in Dallas.
