Shaheen Afridi is back as T20 captain and calls for consistency in team selection.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has supported Shaheen Shah Afridi continuing as the T20I captain amid speculation of replacement. “If someone is appointed as captain, time should also be given. Frequent changes as faces change in the board hampers progress,” Afridi stated.
He remarked that the decision to appoint Shaheen needs to be backed, or the potential change would also be flawed. Afridi was instrumental in Shaheen’s appointment post Pakistan’s failure at the 2021 World Cup.
The all-rounder emphasized consistency in selection. “Deciding fitness after inclusion in camps will improve players, unlike assessing before selection,” Afridi noted.
Afridi agreed on a foreign coach but insisted the support staff must comprise Pakistanis to boost their skillsets. Retired pacer Mohammad Amir has also endorsed Shaheen continuing as skipper through a tweet.
Amir, who came out of retirement post 2020, said Shaheen is capable and deserves time. Afridi also assessed that including Imad Wasim and Amir in the training camp could transform them if they overcome the rigours.
Former players have voiced for stability and patience from selectors. They maintained that Shaheen’s credentials would only be affirmed or dismissed through uninterrupted opportunities.
