Shaniera Akram defends husband amid “Divorced XI” controversy

Shaniera, the wife of former Pakistan bowler Wasim Akram, was in the news recently when she responded to a troll handle on social media. There was a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) which had a list titled the “Divorced XI,” naming some of the best cricketers, including Indian legends Ravi Shastri, Javagal Srinath, Dinesh Karthik, and Shikhar Dhawan. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was named as the impact player, and Akram’s name also featured, with Shaniera responding with an outraged reaction.

Shaniera headed to her social media to charge the account “Out Of Context Cricket” with the spread of misinformation. She wrote, “Hey @GemsOfCricket. You guys are certainly ‘out of context’ and from what I can tell you’re also out of proper and accurate information!”

Back to Akram’s private life, he first married Huma Mufti in 1995, and the two had two sons in their 14-year-long union. Sadly, Mufti passed away in 2009 from multiple organ failure at Chennai Hospital in India. In 2013, Akram married Australia-born Shaniera Thompson, whom he met in Melbourne. Akram and Shaniera have a daughter born in December 2014 and are known to be living happily as a family.

In the world of Pakistan cricket, the campaign of the team in the Champions Trophy 2025 came to a very sudden end after playing just two matches. Following a humiliating 60-run defeat against New Zealand, the pressure was mounted immensely for their match against arch-rivals India. For Pakistan, victory was a must if they were to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. They were, however, facing a very formidable Indian side and lost the match by six wickets.

Virat Kohli was a turning point in this high-stakes match, time and again emerging as a thorn for Pakistan. Popularly known as the ‘chase master,’ Kohli’s performance brought to the fore the Men in Green’s inability to implement their strategies despite their best efforts.
