Leading cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle feels that the Indian cricket team’s bowling attack is now more powerful than their batting going into the five-match Test series against England. The side, being led by Shubman Gill, will begin their English campaign on June 20.
Bhogle, who can be heard on Sony Sports Ten 1 & Ten 5 channels, opined that India’s batsmen are heavily untested in English conditions and hence he feels the bowlers are marginally ahead. But he added that the series would be a golden chance for all the Indian batsmen to rise to the occasion and show their worth since the side will be deprived of the services of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s star power and experience.
With India, I believe the bowling is better at this point. I hope they reach a point where I am proven wrong and the batting sparkles again – Yashasvi and Rahul’s good partnership, Gill getting into a rhythm, and Pant returning to the format in which he plays best. Look- I believe, the No Virat Kohli thing… in people’s minds, we had begun adjusting to a situation when he will not be there.
2 years before Tendulkar finished you knew that the transition was going to occur, you had begun to wrap your head around the reality that he might not be around. The best thing about this game is, that great players come and go and then great players come in. That is the one thing we need to look forward to in this series…how are all these players going to step up in their career,” Bhogle said in an interview with NDTV.
With regard to India’s bowling attack, Bhogle said that Bumrah would be a huge upgrade in English conditions and even predicted the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to deliver.
“Broadly because India’s batting is not tested in these conditions. That is my opinion now. I am waiting to be proved wrong. It is the beginning of the series. I mean, even when Bumrah is not playing, he will make a big difference. I am very glad you referred to the two names we don’t speak of their star careers- Shami and Ashwin.
Siraj, another cricketer we don’t speak much about, may not be so much of a box office stuff, but he has been brilliant year after year. Prasidh Krishna is promising. I liked what I saw of Akash Deep in Aus. These conditions may suit him. Sourav Ganguly has spoken about Arshdeep Singh. If the ground is dry, Kuldeep will come in.”
