Shubman Gill leads India in T20I series against Zimbabwe

Gill confirms opening with Abhishek, Ruturaj’s number 3 slot for Zimbabwe T20Is.

Ahead of the Zimbabwe series opener, India captain Shubman Gill revealed the opening pair and number 3 batter for Saturday’s clash.

Gill stated he will continue opening with Punjab teammate Abhishek Sharma while Ruturaj Gaikwad will slot in at number 3. The duo emulated Rohit-Virat’s 2020 World Cup role.

“Abhishek will open with me, and Ruturaj will play at 3. I prefer opening in T20s,” said Gill, aiming to fill the void left by veterans’ retirements.

While acknowledging idols Rohit and Virat’s achievements will be difficult to match, Gill emphasized focus on team objectives in the next two years.

Gill noted debutants Abhishek, Riyan Parag and others’ exposure alongside experienced players is the series goal. Conditions in Harare will challenge the side, he acknowledged.

He remains excited about the young team’s opportunities. Guidance from NCA head Laxman and learnings from IPL captaincy will help navigate challenges.

Gill is relishing his international captaincy debut and takes Zimbabwe seriously despite a revamped Indian team’s clear favorite tag.
