Shubman Gill to lead India’s inexperienced T20I squad against Zimbabwe

The new generation of Indian cricketers seems to be on the rise after the team management decided to give Salker-born Shubman Gill the captaincy for the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Former Indian top-order batsman Virender Sehwag has supported this decision and has also mentioned that Gill will soon be a regular captain of the Indian side, replacing Rohit Sharma.

“Shubman Gill is for the long term. He plays across all formats. He had a marvelous last year. He missed the bus for the 2024 T20 World Cup. I think this is the right moment to anoint him as a captain. When Rohit Sharma will be leaving tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be the right fit for Rohit Sharma in terms of captaincy,” Sehwag

This T20I squad against Zimbabwe also comprises more players who were part of the initial T20 World Cup squad, with only two included: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson. Some of the reserve players, like Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande, are also players who have done well in IPL and Local tournaments.

The five-match T20I series will start on July 6 at the Harare Sports Club, with the last match being played on July 14 at the same venue.
