Rohit Sharma’s rather disappointing form in Australia puts retirement speculations on one’s mind as he gets just 19 runs in three innings at an average of 6.33. Melbourne: Languid and easy. The two words that have, often enough, been synonymous with Rohit Sharma might so easily, depending upon form, come to mean not just fatigued but lazy also. Many would be stretching towards the latter interpretation now.
As talk of a big player’s retirement swirled around the press box at Gabba on Thursday, the India skipper’s name cropped up more than once before he was eventually ruled out for lack of evidence. Even the fact that his name cropped up shows how disappointing his stay at the wicket has been for this tour and the year.
In the two matches, Rohit spent three innings in the middle, and he scored 19 runs at an average of 6.33. It isn’t just the lack of runs, though. The Aussies have looked like they have got his measure.
“I have not batted well,” Rohit said, acknowledging his meager returns. “There is no harm in accepting that, but I know what is in my mind and how I prepare. All those boxes are very much ticked. It is about spending as much time as possible (at the crease). I am pretty sure I am just there.”
