South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs in the second Test in Chittagong and completed a 2-0 series sweep. The Proteas, earlier, enforced the follow-on after bowling out the hosts for just 143 runs on day three.
Seamer Kagiso Rabada was majorly instrumental in the victory, claiming five wickets as South Africa sent Bangladesh crashing for 159 in their first innings to gain an enormous lead of 416 runs. The pressure was then fully applied when South Africa enforced the follow-on Thursday.
Bangladesh collapsed familiarly, being bowled out in the evening session, to lose the second Test in Chittagong, after their seven-wicket defeat in the first match in Dhaka, as Keshav Maharaj took 5 for 59 and the offspinner Senuran Muthusamy finished with 4 for 45. Sixteen wickets fell on the final day at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
Rabada cleared key wickets, such as Najmul Hossain Shanto for nine and Mehidy Hasan Miraz for one run, to end at 5 for 37. Dane Paterson supported him, as a wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim for a duck further sank Bangladesh in the first innings.
Resuming the day at 38 for 4, Bangladesh briefly fought back from 48 for 8, with Mominul Haque hitting 82. His wicket to Muthusamy ended a vital 103-run stand with Taijul Islam, who added 30 runs before falling to Maharaj’s second victim.
The South African bowlers were relentless in the second innings, despite Shanto’s 36, Ankon’s 29, and a late rearguard from Hasan Mahmud, who was unbeaten on 38, sealing the victory.
South Africa, in its first innings, scored a commanding 575 for 6 with three batsmen recording their maiden Test centuries: Tony de Zorzi (177), Tristan Stubbs (106), and Wiaan Mulder (105 not out). De Zorzi was named player of the match as Rabada received the player of the series award.
This win keeps South Africa unbeaten against Bangladesh in Test cricket, having played 16 matches. Next, the Proteas will play Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home from late November as they seek to firm up their position in the World Test Championship.
