Sunil Gavaskar issues warning to Shubman Gill on Test captaincy

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar commented on the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new Test captain. Legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar commented on the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new Test captain.

Gill will be leading the national team in the five-match Test series against England with Rishabh Pant as his stand-by. Gavaskar indicated that Gill would have to earn the respect of the players and deal with the pressure associated with the appointment.

After Rohit’s retirement, Gill was selected as his replacement ahead of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul. Gavaskar further noted that captaincy alters the dynamics for many players and Gill would have to conduct himself in a manner that marks his authority.

There is always pressure on the player who gets picked as India’s captain because there is a huge difference between being part of the team and being the captain,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Sports Tak.

Because when you are a player, you just usually deal with players near you, but once you are the captain, you must act so that other players in the team respect you and a captain’s behaviour is more vital than his performance,” he continued.

As Shubman Gill steps into command of India’s Test team before the much-awaited series against England, ex-cricketer Yograj Singh credited the minds behind the young skipper’s development, as well as his father and India legend Yuvraj Singh.

In an interview with ANI, Yograj Singh laid stress on the role of robust mentorship and support from his family that helped define Gill’s career. The credit for Shubman Gill’s show goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” he stated. If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will remain for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played a crucial part in that,” he further added.

Yograj, a former India international and father of Yuvraj Singh, is enthused about how Yuvraj’s cricketing brain has assisted Gill in developing as a player and a leader. Someone as great as Yuvraj Singh, the best cricketing brain in the world, mentoring Gill is a big thing,” he said.
