T20 World Cup under threat from the terror group, West Indies issues an alert.
In a worrying development for the upcoming T20 World Cup, sources have revealed that co-hosts West Indies have received a terror threat just weeks before the start of the mega event.
According to sources, the Caribbean islands have been alerted about potential risks from North Pakistan. The month-long tournament, which begins June 1st, will be held across the West Indies and the USA.
While matches will be held in Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, and Trinidad in the West Indies, venues in the USA include Florida, New York, and Texas.
The threat has been attributed to the ISIS Khorasan group. Prominent venues like those hosting the Trinidad and Guyana semi-finals and the Barbados final are on alert.
While authorities maintained close communication with relevant stakeholders, they continuously evaluated security arrangements to counter all identified threats.
Local reports also cited intelligence about a potential Daesh-backed threat to the tournament circulated via ‘Nashir Pakistan’ media group. This has raised uncertainty over India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan.
With players’ safety being a priority, the ICC is expected to discuss venue options for the Champions Trophy when it meets next month in Sri Lanka. Measures aim to ensure the conduct of high-profile cricket events amid the prevailing security environment.
