Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has brushed aside speculation about next year’s ICC Champions Trophy being moved out of Pakistan, steadfastly maintaining the tournament will stay right where it is slated to be held.
Addressing the media during the Pakistan Super League final in Karachi, Naqvi confirmed having a cordial chat with BCCI secretary Jay Shah on the sidelines of recent ICC meetings in Dubai. While refusing to divulge details, he implied the conversation did little to change his stance.
When asked directly if India’s reluctance to tour Pakistan could jeopardize their hosting, Naqvi was categorical in his response.
“I’m not even entertaining such thoughts. We’re confident of welcoming all teams and hosting the event smoothly on schedule,” he asserted.
His remarks come after an ICC board member indicated the world body won’t push India into travelling against their government’s diktat. However, Naqvi seems unperturbed, outlining renovation plans for flagship venues in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi to enhance viewers’ experience.
“Preparations are in full swing. Work will soon commence to upgrade facilities at the three stadiums,” he informed, eagerly awaiting fans.
Unlike last year’s truncated Asia Cup, Naqvi leaves no doubt about Pakistan playing host this time around in its entirety.
While bilateral cricket remains a distant dream with India for now, the PCB chief remains hopeful the Champions Trophy will see relations begin to thaw through cricket. Only time will tell if his optimism converts into reality come next June.
