In a regrettable turn of events, two players from the national women’s team sustained serious injuries in a road accident. The incident unfolded when the players decided to venture out of the team camp during the ongoing white-ball home series against the West Indies, disregarding the curfew imposed by the authorities. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed the occurrence and has promptly taken disciplinary measures against the players involved.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi revealed that during the April 2-8 camp in Karachi, five to six players chose to leave the premises without informing the team management. Tragically, their unauthorized outing resulted in a road accident, leaving two players with significant injuries that necessitated medical treatment.
The PCB, recognizing the gravity of the situation, has chosen not to publicize the incident extensively, including the internal disciplinary actions taken against the players. However, Naqvi disapproved of their actions and emphasized the need for stricter adherence to team protocols. Consequently, the PCB has appointed a full-time senior security police officer to accompany the team at all times and enforce proper timings.
The untoward incident has cast a shadow over the team’s performance in the ODI series against the West Indies, with one of the key players, Fatima Sana, sustaining an injury. While the nature and severity of her injury were not disclosed, it is noteworthy that Sana played in all three matches of the ODI series, which concluded on April 23 with a disappointing 0-3 loss for Pakistan.
Additionally, Naqvi revealed that the PCB is in talks with potential candidates for the head coach position of the Pakistan women’s team, including a high-profile foreign coach. The board is keen on making a suitable appointment to enhance further the team’s prospects and performance in the future.
