Veteran Indian cricketers’ futures unclear ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup

Recent changes in the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the team underpinning the Indian cricket team, raise questions about their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

His becoming the head coach of the team, together with Gautam Gambhir’s appointment, has raised the issue concerning their positions in the group.

Though Gambhir has declared both Rohit and Kohli as his selects for the 2027 edition, insisting that the two have plenty of cricket left in them ahead of the quadrennial showpiece, former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth has said that Rohit may not be available for the 2027 event.

Srikkanth also quoted Gambhir’s previous statement that senior players will have no role in the side if they don’t deliver in the T20 World Cup. However, the coach of the Indian cricket team has flip-flopped now and stated that Rohit and Kohli still have a lot of cricket in them.

Regarding the chances of both duos playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, Srikkanth was of the opinion that though Kohli, who kept himself fit, will be around in the 2027 edition, Rohit, at the age of 40, may not play for India.

Srikkanth minces no words when it comes to Rohit’s chances of playing in world cups in the future, “Unless you are a super-fit person like MS Dhoni or Sachin Tendulkar, you can’t play World Cup at 40s,” came the harsh words from the former skipper, meaning that Rohit may not be part of the team for the 2027 world cup which is to be hosted by South Africa,

The latest two matches’ poor shows have ignited speculations surrounding Rohit and Kohli’s future, which has left Indian cricket fans worried about their future, given that the two have been key assets to the Indian team.

The management and the new coaching staff will again have their task cut out to pave a smooth trajectory for the BCCI and address the issues that the experienced players would have that hinder the team’s progress.
