Times Higher Education published the World University Rankings 2025 on October 9, 2024. The ranking says the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, retains its top position among universities in the country. It has been placed in the 251-300 band, a fall from the 201-250 band in 2024.
Several universities have fared better this year. Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management moved from the 501-600 band in 2024 to the 401-500 band this year. Notably, IIT Indore made an impressive leap to secure a rank this year after not figuring in the list last year. The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies moved from the 801-1000 band in 2024 to the 501-600 band this year.
While Jamia Millia Islamia retained its position in the 501-600 band, Aligarh Muslim University and Banaras Hindu University were placed in the 601-800 band.
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 judged over 2,000 universities of the world in its wide-ranging methodology based on 18 performance indicators across five areas: Teaching learning environment; Research Environment, income, and reputation; Research Quality-citation impact and excellence; International Outlook-staff, students, and research; and Industry-income and patents.
