India rises as a global higher education powerhouse

After undergoing a rigorous process, India’s universities have been rising on the global map, especially in the World University Rankings. Phil Baty, the Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, is no exception to this transformation.

He was very upbeat about the wonderful growth that India has managed in the area of higher education in the last two decades. Baty described the dynamics of the rankings: “I can only note viewing figures which have increased tremendously from India.

”Recalling his first visit to the country 15 years ago, Onaldi observed that there used to be a misconception that India did not wish to be on the world stage and was therefore not concerned with global rankings and standards.

Baty also pointed out that while the number of participating Indian universities is increasing, the ICR says that there is growing ambition and confidence among Indian universities to do better in international rankings.

This is despite the fact that the organizer of the rankings, Times Higher Education, predicted that in the October 2025 rankings, India would equal Britain by boasting one hundred and seven universities.

The coming third best-represented country in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and passion to transform India into a developed country by upgrading its overall structure of education has greatly contributed to this wonderful feat.

On this one, Baty has acknowledged the efforts of the Prime Minister, saying he has successfully achieved a lot in terms of expansion and quality. Let me first highlight the nature of change for Indian university enrollments after the year 2016 in particular.

In that year, 31 universities took part, a figure that has since risen to 133, a clear indication of the growing awareness among universities of the importance of animating their spaces.

This increased participation has placed India in the fourth position among the countries represented in the ranking. Organizations, including Indian universities, seeing their universities improve, are providing a higher degree of social and economic contribution as per India’s growing requirements.

Based on these pillars of achievement, this learning advancement is multifaceted and a clear manifestation of the passion and commitment of India’s policymakers, educators, and students to transform the country into a global education powerhouse.
