New medical college to open in Mumbai’s GT Hospital campus

Honoring the state’s commitment to enhancing medical education facilities in Maharashtra, the state government recently planned to start a new state medical college on Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital in south Mumbai. The college is planned to start from the next academic year of 2024-25, said Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif in the legislative assembly on Thursday.

It may be recalled that in January 2012, the Government cleared the proposal for opening the medical college, and subsequent to this, the Indian Council of Medical Research gave its permission for laying down the necessary infrastructure for the medical college, informed the minister.

The new medical college will be attached to the GT Hospital and Cama and Albless hospitals, while students will also have learning capabilities and exposure to a number of clinical cases.

The principal and founder, Mushrif, asserted that the college would admit 50 students in its first year and could expand in future years. This is in support of the state government’s drive to increase the capacity for training medical students and meet the need for more qualified health care workers in the area.

This has been received positively in the region, as people have called for expanding quality medical education and healthcare centers in the rapidly growing city of Mumbai. The new medical college is expected to provide more seats for medical students who aspire to be doctors and enhance the region’s health system.

With the project green-lighted, the state government will, therefore, engage the respective authorities in a spearheaded and timely supplemented evacuee project to achieve the noble goal of welcoming the first set of students to the new medical college in the next academic year 2024-25.
