Boosting women’s safety at Delhi University
In a significant step towards empowering women students, Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani yesterday announced a funding of Rs. 272 crores from the Nirbhaya Fund for improvement of hostel infrastructure at the Delhi University.
Addressing a conference on women’s strengthening initiatives at DU’s North Campus, the Minister said the funds will enhance boarding facilities for 1000 female residents at various DU hostels. According to the Ministry statement, the revamped accommodation will feature strengthened security measures like CCTV coverage.
Calling it aligned with PM Modi’s vision of enabling women’s achievements, Irani stated the project aims to make girl scholars and working females pursuing higher education feel secure via safe living spaces on campus.
Reliable sources informed us that the sanctioned amount would go into upgrading current hostels and constructing new blocks with gender-friendly amenities. The announcement comes five years after the brutal Delhi gangrape case that prompted the forming of the emergency response corpus.
Welcoming the support, DU administrators noted the rising number of women enrollments and the need for living quarters. It is hoped the modernized hostels will boost women’s access to quality education in the capital by assuring them a protected campus lifestyle.
