This becomes a landmark development in the higher education sector as, for the first time, the University of Southampton will open an international campus in India in association with Oxford International Education Group. The move also fulfills one of the intents of the country’s New Education Policy. It is intended to offer Indian students access to world-class education, research, and enterprise opportunities starting in August 2025.
The new campus will be in Gurugram, Delhi, and will apply the University of Southampton’s internationally renowned model for integrating education, research, and industry collaboration: the ‘triple helix.’ It will initially offer four undergraduate and two postgraduate courses, so students will have a range of academic opportunities.
OIEG will be the important operational partner through which investment and expertise will be introduced to replicate UK standards of learning and employability.
Andrew Atherton, the University of Southampton’s Vice-President for International and Engagement, underlined the significance of this development: “This represents a pivotal moment in our international strategy, signaling our commitment to global engagement and social impact. Our Delhi campus represents a massive investment in India, allowing students to obtain a world-class degree without necessarily having to leave home.”
Lil Bremermann-Richard, CEO of OIEG, iterated the commitment towards access to quality education. “This partnership marks a big step towards fulfilling our global vision of access to top-tier education. While many are seeking to study abroad, a fast-growing number of students believe they can achieve their potential without moving. We are committed to combining the best of the UK and Indian educational systems for them henceforth,” she said.
This initiative is not purely academic in nature; the institution’s research and industry outreach will help drive innovation, further benefiting India’s social and economic development. Further, the venture is a strategic move for both institutions in the fast-growing area of transnational education, with the mission of providing quality education to students from around the globe.
