The Indian embassy in the Southeast Asian nation revealed that at least 47 Indians trapped in cyber scam centers have been rescued from the Bokeo province in Laos. This operation has rescued 635 Indians from Laos.
The embassy has advised citizens to beware of what it terms ‘fake job offers’ in the Lao nation, with a lot of emphasis on checking service verification to avoid the vice. The recent rescue was conducted with 29 people whom Laos authorities deported after they were arrested in the course of valueForKey=’Illegal operations’ in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ); 18 individuals turned to the embassy for help on their own.
Research shows that some individuals pretended to be females on dating platforms and tricked victims into trading in cryptocurrencies. Former detainees testified about the treatment endured, saying that each person was expected to work daily and anyone who did not was denied food and sleep. The Indian embassy has to request the Laos government for its intervention since this continues to be rampant.
Indian officers went to Vientiane for the rescue, with Ambassador Prashant Agrawal interacting with the rescued people and taking their statements. Among these, 30 are either willing or prepared to return to India, but 17 individuals need the final itinerary to fly back to India.
