56-year-old Man Dies After Being Dragged by Tempo in Surat

The incident occurred at Ratnamala Crossroads in Surat around 3:30 pm on Saturday. A 56-year-old man was run over and dragged by a tempo after an altercation with the driver of the vehicle over rash driving, police in Gujarat’s Surat said on Sunday.

The police arrested the 39-year-old driver, Mayur Mer, shortly after. The incident, captured on CCTV cameras, shows the tempo running over Jitendra Kanthariya and dragging him even as his son attempted to stop the driver, a police official said.

The incident happened at Ratnamala Crossroads around 3:30 pm on Saturday. According to the police, Kanthariya and his son were waiting at a traffic signal when the tempo hit their motorcycle.

They remonstrated with the driver over rash driving, following which the driver picked up a heated argument. He gave a mouthful to them, then he sped away, hitting Kanthariya and dragging him for some distance before he disappeared into the dark.

The accused, in his statement, said that he tried to run away as the father-son duo threatened him and accused them of attempting to assault him. He said one of them was standing in the front of the vehicle as he tried to drive away.

This incident comes barely a week after an unidentified car driver allegedly stabbed to death a 23-year-old MBA student from Ahmedabad’s Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA) following a dispute over rash driving.
