9 Arrested for violence at Kolkata hospital after doctor’s rape-murder

The Kolkata Police had put out pictures of some of the actors in the act of violence at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had appealed for information regarding them.

Nine people have been arrested after a mob rampaged through the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, continuing the protest on the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee of the medical college last week on the hospital campus.

Women in Kolkata and many other parts of the country had planned a protest vigil for the night with the hashtag ‘women, reclaim the night’ on Wednesday.

As the people kept vigil from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, some others broke into the compound of the hospital and destroyed property. Cars were stoned, buses and other properties vandalized, and even the police had to use their’sticks’ and fire teargas to bring the situation under check. The Kolkata Police said that 15 of its personnel were injured.

Thursday morning, the police shared some of the photographs of individuals deemed to have posed a part of the mob that attacked the hospital and asked anyone with information about them to come forward. The photos were posted to the social networks, and the faces of the suspected rioters were outlined. The arrests were made and announced many hours later.

The identities of the nine arrested people are still unknown, although a doctor named Anubhav Mondal, who is protesting outside of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, said he was one of the people circled in the pictures released by the Kolkata Police.

“Our protests will continue and get bigger. Whoever thinks they can instill fear in us will not succeed; we want justice at any cost. Our most important demand is a neutral investigation through a court-monitored process and justice,” Mr. Mondal told NDTV.
