A verbal spat has broken out between Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK and the opposition BJP after a controversial remark by a state minister.
During a recent public meeting, Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji launched an unsparing attack against Prime Minister Modi, using highly derogatory language.
His comments did not go down well with the BJP, which accused Balaji of crossing all limits of decency.
Party leaders called the minister’s words “nauseating” and demanded an apology.
However, Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK rallied behind Balaji, saying the criticism was aimed at the PM’s policies, not him personally. They hit back, accusing the BJP of double standards over free speech.
As the war of words escalated on social media, the incident became another flashpoint in the state’s adversarial relationship between the two parties.
With Lok Sabha elections looming, political observers see DMK using provocative language to consolidate anti-BJP votes. But it risks further polarizing an already divided electorate.
Only time will tell if the unsavoury exchanges will affect election fortunes or fizzle out. More fireworks are surely in store in the Tamil Nadu political arena.
