AI-based facial recognition boosts security at Kashmir’s Navyug tunnel

Jammu and Kashmir Police Tap AI to Boost Security.

In a major boost for security operations, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have introduced an advanced AI-based facial recognition system at the key Navyug Tunnel in South Kashmir.

The tunnel at Qazigund is a crucial conduit linking the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu region. Given the sensitive situation, authorities felt stepping up monitoring was imperative.

IG Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi told Zee News the technology aims to track movements of wanted criminals, terrorists and their associates frequently traversing through this route.

“We want to apprehend those involved in anti-national activities crossing between Srinagar and Jammu. This innovative system assists by recognizing faces from our database of suspects,” he remarked.

Housed in a specially designed control room, the user-friendly software, powered by dozens of smart cameras, scans faces at the location. If a match is found with stored records, an alert signals teams on the ground for swift action.

Personnel manning the AI controls have undergone rigorous training to handle their responsibilities efficiently. The system’s accuracy has proven beneficial in rapidly detecting fugitives and outlaws.

By embracing emerging solutions, the force hopes to strengthen security governance and public safety and curb criminal designs more effectively. The initiative underlines commitment to modernising policing as per evolving security dynamics.
