Shahrukh Pathan is currently behind bars as he was arrested for his alleged role in the 2020 Delhi riots. Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is reportedly weighing its option to field Shahrukh Pathan, one of the prime accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, in the Delhi Assembly elections that are likely to be held soon.
According to the AIMIM leader, the decision has not yet been finalized, as reported by the PTI news agency. AIMIM’s Delhi unit president, Shoaib Jamei, confirmed with PTI on Wednesday that Pathan’s name is being considered, but no decision has been made so far.
Shahrukh Pathan is now languishing in Delhi’s Tihar jail after he was arrested for his involvement in the 2020 riots in the national capital when he was accused of pointing a gun at a police officer.
The picture where he held the gun had done the rounds on social media during the violence. Pathan has been in prison ever since he was taken away.
The AIMIM has already declared the candidacy of former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain from the Mustafabad constituency. The latter has joined Owaisi’s party. Tahir Hussain is also an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots.
On Monday, Jamei met with Pathan’s family and shared a photograph from the meeting on social media. Jamei also said today that the AIMIM plans to contest 12 seats in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls and is still finalizing candidates.
