An ex-deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College has lodged a complaint with the senior vice-president of the Medical Council of India against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who had to resign as the principal of the said college after the misfortune of rape and murder of a trainee doctor. During an interview on 25 January 2016, Akhtar Ali charged Ghosh with various malpractices, like the sale of unclaimed bodies.
In his defense, Ali said Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer held in the murder case, used to be a part of Ghosh’s security team. He further accused Ghosh of trafficking biomedical waste as well as medical supplies to neighboring Bangladesh. “Ghosh used to work with corpses and one time was charged. Moreover, he was involved in trading biomedical waste, which his partners in Bangladesh took and exported,” explained Ali.
Working at RG Kar Hospital until 2023, Ali sent his complaints to the state Vigilance Commission and was involved in a case against Ghosh. Even in cases where the investigators found wrongdoing, no action was taken. After presenting the inquiry report to the state health department, Ali was transferred the next day.
The public protests forced Ghosh to resign, but he was reappointed at Calcutta Medical College shortly afterward; however, the Calcutta High Court suspended him on leave. The state government has launched an audit into alleged fraudulent activities by officials at the institution since January this year.
Ali also said that Ghosh asked for cash for students to pass his course and that he used to set a few to fail in order to recover what he had paid to admit them. Baabar went on to elucidate Ghosh’s modus operandi: a 20 percent commission on every tender with supplying contracts to two of his acquaintances, Suman Hazra and Biplab Singha.
“When such a person continues in a leadership position, he becomes a menace to society and should be arrested on sight,” Ali noted, pointing out at the people that Ghosh had influential contacts to reinstate him back to a leadership position after transferring him.
