Amit Shah assures persecuted refugees of citizenship rights

Union Home Minister Amit Shah once revealed that under the government of Narendra Modi, the refugees who are in a dilemma to get equal rights and citizenship due to their belonging to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan would benefit from enjoying their rights under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Shah urged the refugees to entrust the government and pointed out it as the CAA that acknowledges them as refugees without laying criminal charges for illegal entry into India.

Shah of ANI confessed while talking to the media during the interview that there is a large community of refugees. Still, at the same time, he expressed the problem of disinformation discouraging people from applying for citizenship. He guaranteed them that their cases would be resolved with all its initial outcomes, thus citizenship is accorded. Shah used the example of the CAA to show that the CAA gives rights of citizenship and protection to persecuted minorities, including Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Christians, and Parsis from the rows of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Shah argued that people’s citizenship was not being taken away and that CAA would be enjoyed by all such people on par with Indians, allowing them to participate in elections and hold office if they like.

The Union of Ministry of Home Affairs issued the rules regarding the CAA, which came into effect on March 11th, 2024. The CAA 2019, on the other hand, seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who have fled persecution in the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan before 31 December 2014 (Citizenship Amendment Act).
