Amravati hit by 4.2-magnitude quake

Maharashtra: An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit parts of the Amravati district this afternoon. According to reports, the quake’s epicenter was located in the Amravati district, near Chikhaldara, at around 3.13 pm.

This quake caused moderate-intensity shaking in several areas, including Chikaldhara, Katkumbh, Churni, and Pachdongri talukas, located in the district’s hilly terrain.

Tremors were also felt in several parts of Paratwada city and Dharni in the Akot areas, but this earthquake killed no one and destroyed no property.

Residents in the affected areas faced slight shaking as the tremors continued only briefly.

There was mass moving out of homes for a short period of time as a precautionary measure.

The local officials also inspected the areas where the people had experienced shaking and could not find anything to indicate some damages brought about as a result of this earthquake.

The region is seismically active, and the Amravati district falls in North Maharashtra, which also experienced such low-intensity tremors earlier.

The experts attribute local disturbance in the Western Ghats mountain ranges coupled with stress due to large projects like dams as major reasons behind seismic activity here, but Monday’s quake was nowhere near being large enough to induce panic or destruction on a mass scale.
