Amritpal Singh seeks release to take oath as Khadoor Sahib MP

Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP-elect, is currently in detention in Assam Dibrugarh jail under the NSA. He has prayed to be released on bail or parole so that he can take the oath of membership in the Parliament.

Amritpal sent a written application to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Imaan Singh Khara, his legal adviser, said the Punjab government has reportedly submitted Amritpal’s application to meet with him. It was moved through the jail superintendent to the Punjab government as the NSA’s Section 15 on June 9.

This development has come a day after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) gave its consent to jailed pro-Indian Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, otherwise known as Engineer Rashid, to take his oath as a member of the Lok Sabha on July 5th.

In Rashid’s case, it became possible with the consent of the NIA; hence, the focus rests on the Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision on Amritpal Singh’s application. Regarding the Khadoor Sahib constituency, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal claimed a massive victory over Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira, leading by 1. 97 lakh votes.

Three of Amritpal’s aides and other detainees under the NSA also declared to contest the upcoming assembly by-elections in Punjab’s Barnala, Gidderbaha, and Dera Baba Nanak assembly segments.
