Assam IPS officer’s tragic suicide after Wife’s cancer death

Sadly, another story of a cop taking his life came to light at the fag end of last year, when Shiladitya Chetia of IPS cadre, posted as Home and Political Secretary to the Government of Assam’s ended his life post his wife Agomoni Barbaruah’s battle succumbed to Stage 4 cancer disease.

On Tuesday, June 18, this tragic incident happened at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati, where the patient Agomoni had been admitted for the past two months. Hearing the shocking news of his wife’s demise, which occurred while he was on leave for four months, mainly serving as an IPS officer, the man broke down.

Said the eyewitnesses; when the attending physician told Chetia that Agomoni had passed on, he asked everyone in the room to leave, claiming he wanted to have a moment of prayer to have Agomoni’s soul released to God. Shortly after that, a shot rang out, and the staff entered to find that Chetia had collapsed alongside his wife with a gunshot wound from his service weapon to his head.

The Director General of Police for Assam, GP Singh, shared his condolences on this civilian tragedy on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, stating that the ‘entire Assam Police family’ was ‘in deep grief’ for the deceased officer and his wife.

The Assam Police also expressed sadness over the death of Chetia and said his “unprecedented commitment towards Assam shall always be remembered.

As a young woman interested in becoming a writer, she wrote a book of short stories in 2022, Agomoni’s Her Him and Them – Inner Tales. The cancer had been diagnosed in her for nearly two years, while the family had been waiting for a successful rallying through various therapies.

This sad event has put the Assam government and state police in deep sorrow and volatile agitation as it has claimed a committed law-enforcing officer and his loving wife.
